25/04/24 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 25 April, the Party of European Socialists (PES) denounced the attacks by the Spanish right and far right on Begoña Gómez, the wife of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, who has been accused of conflict of interest and misuse of social assets, as well as personal attacks. “We know that Begoña will defend her honour and cooperate fully to clarify the facts and defend herself against these accusations”, said PES President Stefan Löfven. “Judicial proceedings are used by the far right to attack the integrity of politics” in Spain, he denounced, castigating the Spanish right and far right, which reject the verdict of the ballot box and are trying to destabilise Spain. In an open letter addressed to the Spanish people on Wednesday, Mr Sánchez said that he was distancing himself from his position and giving himself until 29 April to decide whether to remain in power.
