02/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – Italy’s ‘Balon Mundial’, Belgium’s ‘The Urban Youth Games’ and Finland’s ‘SwimPower’, who are the three finalists in the ‘Breaking Barriers’ category of the #BeInclusive EU Sport Awards 2023 (see EUROPE 13375/42), were honoured by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Education and Culture in a publication released on Tuesday 2 April. These projects stand out for their commitment to use sport as a lever for the social inclusion of people from disadvantaged backgrounds. ‘Balon Mundial’ uses football to create a safe and inclusive space for women and ‘non-binary people’, reaching more than 2,000 athletes each year. The ‘Urban Youth Games’ unite the Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympics movements to promote the inclusion of young people. ‘SwimPower’ offers migrant women the opportunity to learn to swim, strengthening their sense of belonging and empowerment.
