02/04/2024 (Agence Europe) – The recent adoption of legislation on ‘Non-Commercial Organisations’, better known as the legislation on ‘Foreign Representatives’, in the Kyrgyz Republic, is a worrying development according to a statement made by the EU diplomatic service. Legislation that restricts the ability of civil society organisations to operate freely could have a negative impact on Kyrgyz society and its cooperation with international partners (including the EU), said the statement. The European Union remains committed to bilateral cooperation with the Kyrgyz Republic based on respect for fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and democratic standards. These values form an integral part of the Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP+) and the upcoming Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA). (LC)
