In the run-up to the elections, the European branch of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA-Europe) is stepping up its ‘Come Out 4 Europe’ campaign (see EUROPE 13366/31) to promote freedom and equality for LGBTI people in the European Union. On Friday 29 March, the organisation released a publication setting out six strategic recommendations for effectively engaging candidates in support of this cause.
ILGA-Europe is therefore encouraging the sending of personalised letters to candidates, inviting them to sign the campaign pledge to show their support for LGBTI voters and their allies.
In addition, making appointments to discuss it and mobilising people via social networks are recommended to boost the campaign’s visibility.
Other suggested actions include using one’s personal network to persuade candidates and encourage them to take a public stand, and mobilising allies to strengthen the collective voice. ILGA-Europe also provides a collection of resources to equip campaigners with convincing arguments when interacting with candidates.
The association stresses the importance of rigorous monitoring, pointing out that every effort counts in influencing the future direction of Europe. ILGA-Europe calls for a collective mobilisation to shape a European community where the freedom and equality of LGBTI people are fully recognised and celebrated.
