On Tuesday 2 April, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, invited the heads of state or government of the countries of the European Union to a new series of informal dinners designed to further reflect on the future strategic agenda (see EUROPE 13288/19).
“We have identified together a set of clear priorities”, he said in his invitation letter. These priorities are as follows: - a strong and secure Europe (security, defence, migration, external action); - a prosperous and competitive Europe (competitiveness, energy and climate transition, innovation); - a free and democratic Europe (fundamental values and the rule of law).
The four dinners will be held in Vilnius, Bucharest, Warsaw and Vienna. The Vilnius dinner will be attended by the leaders of Lithuania, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Bulgaria.
The aim for the participants will be to specify the EU’s future objectives in each area, to break them down into concrete measures and steps and, in their view, to match the priorities set with the financial resources to be allocated to them.
The EU’s strategic agenda for 2030 will be adopted by the European Council at the end of June, at the same time as the roadmap for the internal reform of the EU with a view to its enlargement to more than 30 countries.
