11/03/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 11 March, the EU Council approved the provisional political agreement reached with the European Parliament on 27 February on the transparency and targeting of political advertising (see EUROPE 13359/5). The text includes a series of provisions designed to combat the manipulation of information and foreign interference in elections. However, the provisions relating to interference will not be applied during the next European elections, which will take place from 6 to 9 June, as several Member States considered that the timetable was too tight to comply before the ballot. As soon as these measures come into force, third countries and entities from third countries will no longer be able to sponsor political advertising for a period of 3 months prior to an election or referendum within the EU27, or during elections.
