Product liability, MEPs give green light to European Parliament/EU Council agreement

22/02/24 (Agence Europe)On Thursday 22 February, the European Parliament’s Committees on Legal Affairs (JURI) and Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) approved by 40 votes to 2 the provisional political agreement reached on 14 December 2023 on the revision of the product liability directive (see EUROPE 13314/5). This text updates the rules of civil liability established in 1985 to meet the challenges of the digital age and the circular economy, in order to lighten the burden of proof for consumers seeking compensation for damage suffered as a result of defective products. According to co-rapporteur Pascal Arimont (EPP, Belgian), the directive should be “equal to the challenges of the moment” for both consumers and businesses. The plenary vote is scheduled for April.
