22/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 22 February, the United Kingdom announced its withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty, following the failure of European countries to reach agreement on modernisation of the Treaty that would enable better support for clean technologies (see EUROPE 13296/31). The UK joins the list of nine EU Member States that have also confirmed their withdrawal, including France, Spain and the Netherlands. “Talks have stalled and sensible renewal looks increasingly unlikely”, said Graham Stuart, Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. “Remaining a member would not support our transition to cleaner, cheaper energy, and could even penalise us for our world-leading efforts to deliver net zero”.
