20/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 20 February in Brussels, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, and the Guatemalan President, Bernardo Arévalo, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in order to enhance future relations between the EU and Guatemala in the political, trade and cooperation spheres. In this way, “we are demonstrating our clear and firm desire to strengthen our bilateral relations by establishing a regular, open and structured dialogue”, said Mr Borrell, confident in his counterpart’s ability to rise to the challenge of “the fight for social justice in a country with enormous inequalities”. He recalled that, in early February, the EU had adopted European sanctions against five officials close to the previous government in power who had tried to prevent Mr Arévalo taking office (see EUROPE 13342/25).
