Stéphanie Yon-Courtin calls for artificial intelligence not to be controlled by a handful of companies

20/02/24 (Agence Europe)At an event organised by her group in the European Parliament on Monday 19 February, French MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin (Renew Europe) called for “the same GAFAMs (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Microsoft) not to be perpetuated in the artificial intelligence sector”. “Let’s not allow a handful of companies control this technology, which will have a massive impact on our daily lives”, she added (see EUROPE 13349/16). In her view, the EU’s approach should, among other things, be based on the use of existing legislation, in particular the Digital Markets Act (DMA) (see EUROPE 13347/17, 13275/19) and EU competition policy. For the MEP from the centrist group, these tools should be used to ensure that artificial intelligence remains “accessible while boosting competitiveness”. (TM)
