20/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 19 February, the EU High Representative Josep Borrell announced, with regard to his missions in Mali and Niger, that the EU was considering “how (it could) reallocate the €70 million from the European Peace Facility measures to other countries in the region”. Since it was set up in March 2021, the EPF has provided €70 million in support to the armed forces of Niger and €24 million to those of Mali. The Niger junta has denounced the agreement establishing the legal basis for deploying the EUCAP Sahel Niger mission and the EUMPM military partnership mission. The EU has also suspended its training of Malian soldiers within EUTM Mali because of their association with Wagner. According to a European source, Member States are divided over the continuation of the mission, whose mandate expires in May. (CG)
