02/02/24 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 2 February, the European Union adopted sanctions against five high-ranking Guatemalan officials who attempted to obstruct the inauguration of the new president, Bernardo Arévalo, in mid-January (see EUROPE 13328/22). Among the five people whose assets will be frozen and who will be barred from entering the EU is the Attorney General of Guatemala, María Consuelo Porras. “The EU is ready to take further steps” to ensure that those responsible for undermining the integrity of the country’s democratic process are held to account, said its High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, in a statement.
