15/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – The Parliament’s negotiators, led by Javi López (S&D, Spanish), the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU and the European Commission will meet again on Tuesday 20 February at 1.00 pm for a final negotiating session (‘trilogue’) on the proposed revision of the directives on ambient air quality to bring the limit values per atmospheric pollutant more into line with WHO recommendations (see EUROPE 13051/1). This fourth ‘trilogue’ should be the last (see EUROPE 13335/15). The issues of short-term action plans (Article 20), the timetable for alignment and penalties are among the most contentious. The Parliament is calling for people made ill by excessive pollution to be able to benefit from an enhanced right to compensation for harm suffered in the event of infringement of the future rules – still a sensitive issue for the Council.
