15/02/2024 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 15 February, European Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podesta confirmed that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, sees “very positively” the idea of a European Defence Commissioner. “It will be for the new President of the Commission to decide the composition (...) of the College”, she added, while Ms von der Leyen has not yet announced her intentions for the future. In its manifesto for the European elections, the EPP, Ms von der Leyen’s party, proposed the creation of such a post. At present, the EU High Representative for Security Policy and the Commissioner for the Internal Market are responsible for defence. (CG)
