31/01/24 (Agence Europe) – Blood tests have shown that high-level European representatives are affected by PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances), forever chemical pollutants that carry serious health risks, such as cancer. The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) and ChemSec, the International Chemicals Secretariat, revealed that seven types of PFAS were found in the 11 subjects tested. While five of them exceed safety thresholds, their levels are comparable to the average exposure in Europe. These discoveries highlight the failure to control chemical substances within the EU and the urgent need to regulate these harmful products. Some PFAS variants have already been banned and others regulated, but chemical pollution remains a cause for concern. This calls into question the effectiveness of current legislation and the industrial pressure to reform the EU’s REACH legislation (see EUROPE 13309/6). (NP)
