In response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Chad and Sudan, on Wednesday 31 January the European Commission announced a €117 million humanitarian aid package for 2024.
Of this amount, €45 million is earmarked for Chad, where the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, is currently on a mission.
This aid will help to meet the most pressing needs for protection, emergency food, medical care, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter and education for children - in particular the needs of refugees, returnees and host communities affected by the Sudanese conflict.
Chad, which already hosted one of the largest refugee populations in the region before the current conflict in Sudan, now has almost 1.3 million refugees among a total population of 17.4 million.
The €72 million in vital aid for Sudan is an initial allocation, given the scale of the humanitarian needs of the 24.8 million people affected by the conflict - around half the population. The aid will be used to provide essential services and protection for displaced people. This will involve supporting the education of 3 million displaced children.
