In a ruling handed down on Thursday 25 January (case C-481/22), the Court of Justice of the European Union found Ireland in breach of Directive 1998/83 governing the quality of water intended for human consumption.
According to the Court, the Irish authorities had not adopted the measures necessary to ensure that water intended for human consumption met the minimum requirement for trihalomethane concentrations in water in accordance with the values set out in EU law.
