17/01/24 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 17 January, the European Commission announced the addition of ‘Safranbolu Safranı’ to the EU register of protected designations of origin (PDOs). It is an aromatic plant from the Safranbolu region of Turkey. This saffron is superior in terms of aroma, colour and colouring properties to saffron produced elsewhere in the world, and can dye 100,000 times its own weight in aqueous yellow. It is produced, grown, fertilised, harvested and dried in the locality of Safranbolu, in the sub-prefecture of Karabuk. The region enjoys a semi-dry climate with low humidity. The region’s temperature and rainfall are ideal for the needs of the saffron plant. This new designation will be added to the list of 1,684 agricultural products already protected. (LC)
