EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Foreign affairs

EU must invest more in conflict prevention, according to European Parliament

On Wednesday 17 January, the European Parliament recommended that the Commission, the EU Council and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy “enhance their role and meaningful involvement in the processes of conflict prevention and resolution” and in mediation for the implementation of ceasefire agreements concluded under the auspices of the Union.

In the report on “the role of preventive diplomacy in tackling frozen conflicts around the world – missed opportunity or change for the future?” by Željana Zovko (EPP, Croatian), which they adopted (533 votes in favour, 64 against and 25 abstentions), MEPs consider that the use of political, diplomatic or military strategies alone has often proved ineffective in preventing conflicts. In their view, it is therefore necessary to adopt a “comprehensive, ambitious, inclusive, gender-responsive approach” to conflict prevention and peace-building.

The European Parliament also advocates promoting the EU’s involvement in mediation, peace-building and conflict resolution, and strengthening partnerships and coordination in the field of preventive diplomacy with international, regional and sub-regional players.
