EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT PLENARY / Central asia

European Parliament wants closer cooperation in context of global and regional geopolitical change

On Wednesday 17 January in Strasbourg, MEPs voted 543 in favour, 42 against and 44 abstentions in favour of the report by Karsten Lucke (S&D, German), recognising the “need” to update the EU-Central Asia strategy in the light of profound geopolitical changes.

Since the adoption of the Central Asia strategy in 2019, aimed at promoting resilience, prosperity and regional cooperation, the region has been affected by significant external factors, such as Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and China’s global ambitions.

The region also saw unrest in Kazakhstan in January 2022, the repression of demonstrations in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast in Tajikistan in November 2021 and May 2022, and in the Republic of Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan in July 2022, as well as clashes on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

The report therefore aims to examine the opportunities and challenges for closer cooperation between the EU and Central Asia in this context of global and regional upheaval.
