08/01/24 (Agence Europe) – Negotiators from the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council and the European Parliament will resume talks on the reform of the Schengen Borders Code on 10 January. This will be the second trilogue meeting, and discussions are expected to focus in particular on the list of essential journeys (when internal border controls and restrictions on travellers to the EU are re-introduced in several Member States in the event of a pandemic) or the justifications for internal controls based on migration. The instrumentalisation of migration, which the rapporteur Sylvie Guillaume (S&D, French) has excluded from the reform (see EUROPE 13265/28), could also be discussed at this second meeting of negotiations, as could the transfers from one Member State to another of illegal immigrants apprehended at borders as part of joint police operations.
