18/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 18 December, the EU Council agreed to forward the MEPs’ request to convene a convention to reform the European treaties based on Article 48 of the EU Treaty, to the European Council. It will therefore be up to the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council, which begins on 1 January, to invite the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to put the issue of treaty revision on the agenda of a European summit, probably in the first half of 2024 (see EUROPE 13314/31). On 22 November, the European Parliament adopted by a slim majority its position on a revision of the institutional architecture of the European Union to enable a European Union of more than thirty Member States to function (see EUROPE 13298/7).
