On Wednesday 6 December, the AGE Platform Europe, which defends the rights of older people in the EU, launched its ‘Manifesto for the European elections’ calling on the next European Parliament “to take account of the ageing population in future legislation, by ensuring that the elderly of today and tomorrow are considered both as equal citizens, enjoying the same rights as people of all ages, and as individual personalities with specific abilities and needs”, says a press release.
Among its recommendations for concrete action, AGE is asking Europe’s future decision-makers to “promote age equality, ensure participation and active ageing, ensure autonomy and well-being, and adopt a European equality strategy to remove the obstacles that prevent people from living fairly and freely in old age”.
AGE is also calling on decision-makers to support a United Nations convention on the rights of the elderly and to guarantee income adequacy in old age.
It is also about protecting against abuse and promoting autonomy and dignity in care.
