01/12/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 1 December, EU High Representative Josep Borrell strongly condemned the Russian Supreme Court’s decision to ban the international LGBT public movement, which it described as “extremist”, and to prohibit its activities on Russian territory. “Amid the decades-long crackdown on the rights of LGBTIQ persons unleashed under President Putin, this decision aims at further persecuting the LGBTIQ community in Russia and aims to stifle civil society and those courageously defending human rights”, he denounced. According to Mr Borrell, this decision will prevent LGBTIQ people from enjoying their human rights and dignity for fear of unjustified persecution. He urged Russia to put an end to this unfounded repression and to respect, protect and implement human rights without discrimination of any kind. (CG)
