In an open letter addressed to the Member States and the Members of the European Parliament, some twenty European industrialists called for the safeguarding of a specific article in the text of the Net-Zero Industry Act (NZIA): the obligation for designated stakeholders to set up CO2 storage capacity.
The letter targets oil and gas producers in particular: “It is crucial that harder-to-abate industrial sectors are offered feasible pathways for decarbonisation, including through Carbon Capture and Storage”, it says.
The signatories of the text are calling for the agreement to be validated by the EU Council to “keep the obligation as proposed, and the CO2 Storage Injection Capacity target in the NZIA of at least 50 million tonnes as an EU Target”.
Discussions on the Net-Zero Industry Act in the EU Council are still ongoing (see EUROPE 13271/9). The Spanish Presidency of the EU Council has sent Member State delegations a fourth draft compromise, which is due to be studied by the EU27 experts in a working group on Monday 13 November.
