09/11/23 (Agence Europe) – In a press release issued on Wednesday 8 November, the Community of European Railways (ERC) welcomed the European Commission’s proposal to revise the directive on the combined transport of goods between Member States in order to make freight ‘greener’ (see EUROPE 13287/18). “It is nonetheless imperative that public measures to reduce the costs by at least 10% will be effectively implemented and that the process to support combined transport is significantly simplified and streamlined,” commented Alberto Mazzola, Executive Director of the ERC. To be fully effective, the review of combined transport would require further fundamental changes to the proposed directive on weights and dimensions to make lorries and trailers truly interoperable with environmentally friendly modes of transport, such as rail, according to the ERC (see EUROPE 13220/21).
