09/11/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 9 November, around a hundred members of the European Parliament and national parliaments, including Marie Toussaint (Greens/EFA, French) and Caroline Roose (Greens/EFA, French), called on the Norwegian Parliament to oppose the deep-water mining project in the Norwegian Sea. In June this year, the Norwegian government proposed opening up 281,200 square kilometres of the Norwegian Sea to deepwater mining. According to a letter (https://aeur.eu/f/9hx ) from these personalities, scientists, parliamentarians and politicians from all over the world “warn about the risk such activity will cause to marine biodiversity and the acceleration of climate change”. 700 scientific experts say that deep-sea mining would lead to “the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning that would be irreversible on multi-generational timescales”.
