MEPs adopted by a very large majority (505 votes in favour, 9 against and 76 abstentions), on Wednesday 4 October, the resolution tabled by Ilhan Kyuchyuk (Renew Europe, Bulgarian) on Uzbekistan.
The report highlights the country’s key role in Central Asia, making it a region of strategic interest to the EU in terms of “security, connectivity, energy diversification, conflict resolution and defence of the rules-based multilateral international order”.
The report also states that the European Parliament is closely monitoring social and political developments in Uzbekistan and is making recommendations for the future development of EU-Uzbekistan relations.
Parliament placed particular emphasis on human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law, condemning the crackdown on the Karakalpak people and reaffirming the importance of the right to freedom of assembly, association and expression.
It also calls for sectoral cooperation between the EU and Uzbekistan to be stepped up, “particularly in energy diversification, sustainable transport lanes and people-to-people contacts”.
