29/09/23 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 28 September, the European Commission sent France a reasoned opinion for infringement of Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise. This directive requires Member States to draw up noise maps and action plans for conurbations, major roads, major rail routes and major airports - to be revised at least every 5 years, if necessary. However, despite a letter of formal notice being sent in May 2013 and again in December 2017, there are still 22 action plans missing for conurbations and 67 for major roads in this country. In its reasoned opinion, the Commission calls on France to fulfil its obligations. If there is no satisfactory response within 2 months, the institution may refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the EU. (AN)
