Tonino Picula calls for stronger transatlantic partnership

The European Parliament’s rapporteur on EU-US relations, Tonino Picula (S&D, Croatian), recommended that the Council, the Commission and the EU High Representative work towards an “an even stronger, mutually beneficial” partnership between the Union and the United States “in order to face the new and dangerous realities shaping our societies and communities”, in his draft report published on 27 September.

The MEP also called for closer cooperation on foreign policy, notably on support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia and its allies, and the Western Balkans. He sets out the need to “assess the importance of the strong convergence of transatlantic positions towards China, building more and more on the ‘de-risking’ strategy while looking for ways to cooperate with China on some global challenges”.

In terms of security and defence cooperation, the MEP proposes deepening partnerships in the areas of cooperation envisaged by NATO’s Strategic Concept and the EU’s ‘Strategic Compass’. He would also like to see greater collaboration between American and European defence companies on joint projects to achieve common security and defence objectives and ensure greater interoperability between the EU, the US and NATO.

According to Mr Picula, the United States and the EU should also strengthen their cooperation in areas of defence of democracy, cybernetics and energy, and in countering the manipulation of information and foreign interference.
