28/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – The 45th annual meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO), held in Vigo, Spain, from 18 to 22 September, concluded with decisions on the sustainable management of the main fish stocks that are emblematic for EU vessels, such as Greenland halibut, cod and redfish. The total allowable catch (TAC) for Greenland halibut for 2024 has been set at virtually the same level as for 2023. For the Flemish Cap cod stock, the scientific advice provides for an increase in fishing opportunities, which would allow the biomass of the stock to increase further. In addition, the temporal and spatial closure to fishing has been extended for a year to protect the stock. Finally, Northern prawn fishing on the Flemish Cap and Grand Bank remains closed. (LC)
