06/09/2023 (Agence Europe) – “The June-July-August (JJA) season for 2023 was the warmest on record globally by a large margin, with an average temperature of 16.77°C, 0.66°C above average”, announced the EU’s Earth observation programme, Copernicus, on 6 August. The average European temperature for the summer was 19.63°C, 0.83°C above average, and according to the C3S monthly climate bulletin, August as a whole was around 1.5°C warmer than the pre-industrial average for 1850-1900. These figures prompted a reaction from the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who stated in a press release: “Climate breakdown has begun”, urging leaders to “increase the pressure now so as to find solutions”.
