25/08/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Union announced on 11 August that it had accepted the Liberian authorities’ invitation to deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) to Liberia to observe the general elections (President, House of Representatives and half of the Senate) scheduled for 10 October 2023, according to a press release by the European External Action Service. The press release adds that the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, has appointed Andreas Schieder, a Member of the European Parliament, as Chief Observer for this mission. The EU has previously deployed EOMs to Liberia in 2005 and 2017, an electoral expert mission in 2011, and an election monitoring mission in 2021. (SP)
