EU agri-food trade rebounds in May 2023

After a slowdown in April (see EUROPE 13230/8), EU agri-food trade rebounded with an increase in imports and exports in May, according to the latest monthly report published on Friday 25 August by the European Commission.

The latest report on EU agri-food trade shows that the biggest rise in exports of these products relative to imports saw the EU’s agri-food surplus rise by 2% month-on-month in May, to €5.2 billion.

EU agri-food exports rose by 8% month-on-month in May 2023, reaching €19.4 billion, the same amount as in May 2022. Exports from January to May 2023 totalled €95.7 billion overall, up 8% on the corresponding period in 2022. The top three destinations for EU agri-food exports between January and May were the United Kingdom, the United States and China.

EU imports rose in May to €14.3 billion, an increase of 10% month-on-month. However, they are still 8% below their May 2022 level. The top three origin countries for EU agri-food imports between January and May were Brazil, the United Kingdom and Ukraine.
