EU welcomes abolition of death penalty in Ghana

25/08/2023 (Agence Europe)On 11 August, the European Union welcomed the abolition of the death penalty in Ghana, according to a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS). “With this historic step, Ghana joins the majority of countries in the world that have eliminated capital punishment. The death penalty is a cruel and inhuman punishment that constitutes an unacceptable denial of human dignity and integrity. There is no convincing evidence of its deterrent effect on crime, and miscarriages of justice are irreversible”, adds the press release. The EU “firmly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and will continue to work towards its abolition in the few countries where it is still in force”. (SP)
