On Monday 7 August, the European Commission announced that it had opened an in-depth investigation into the effects of the proposed acquisition of Figma, a provider of an online collaborative tool for interactive product design, by the Adobe group, a global software company.
The proposed acquisition was notified to the Commission on 30 June 2023. The Commission found that the notified concentration raised serious doubts as to its compatibility with the internal market.
The Commission is concerned that the proposed transaction would reduce competition in the global markets for the supply of interactive product design software, particularly as Figma is the market leader and Adobe is one of its main competitors. Furthermore, the Commission considers it unlikely that other players will make a solid and timely entry into this market.
On the other hand, the Commission is concerned that the proposed transaction would reduce competition from tools for creating digital assets.
