23/08/23 (Agence Europe) – Possible irregularities have been uncovered by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sofia, Bulgaria, concerning the implementation of an EU-funded project to modernise the country’s railway infrastructure, as indicated in an OLAF press release published on Wednesday 23 August. The Office found that two of the bidders selected as part of the procurement procedure did not have the technical capacity to implement the project or had misrepresented their financial capacity. The Office therefore recommends recovering more than €38 million and preventing further expenditure of €92 million. The current investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is focusing on possible criminal offences and includes a second rail project that the Prosecutor’s Office estimates to cost an additional €111 million.
