On Tuesday 22 August, the Renew Europe group announced that French MEP Catherine Amalric-Michalet would succeed Véronique Trillet-Lenoir, who died on 9 August at the age of 66. A renowned academic and doctor, Dr Catherine Amalric-Michalet will continue the work to “improve the health of all Europeans”.
Ms Amalric-Michalet said: “I will use the expertise I have acquired as a hospital practitioner to serve these objectives: equal access to healthcare for Europeans, medicines and therapeutic innovation, patients’ rights and the development of an ambitious European prevention policy”.
Véronique Trillet-Lenoir was a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, the European Parliament Subcommittee on Public Health (see EUROPE 13148/17) and the Special Committee on the Covid-19 pandemic. She was a tireless campaigner for the health of EU citizens, particularly in the fight against cancer.
Stéphane Séjourné, Chair of the Renew Europe group, said on 9 August: “Véronique’s tragic death is a loss for all of Europe. A model of integrity, Véronique had made the health of Europeans and our health security her fight, based on her university experience and her career as a hospital doctor, whose work was internationally recognised”.
