25/07/23 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 25 July, the Council of the European Union adopted the ‘FuelEU Maritime’ regulation on the use of renewable and low-carbon fuels in maritime transport, as a result of an agreement with the European Parliament. “The main objective [...] is to increase the demand for and consistent use of renewable and low-carbon fuels and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector, while guaranteeing the fluidity of maritime traffic and avoiding distortions in the internal market,” stressed Raquel Sánchez Jiménez, Spain’s Minister for Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, in a press release. The European Parliament validated the interinstitutional agreement in July (see EUROPE 13220/6). The new regulation will apply from 1 January 2025, except for Articles 8 and 9, which will apply from 31 August 2024. Read the regulation: https://aeur.eu/f/87x (AD)
