EU Council adopts agreement with European Parliament on deployment of alternative fuels infrastructure

25/07/23 (Agence Europe)On Tuesday 25 July, the EU Council adopted the ‘AFIR’ regulation on the deployment of an infrastructure for alternative fuels, as a result of negotiations with the European Parliament. ‘AFIR’ plans to install alternative fuel recharging and refuelling stations across Europe over the next few years in order to reduce the transport sector’s carbon footprint. “We are optimistic that in the near future, citizens will be able to charge their electric cars as easily as they do today in traditional petrol stations,” commented Raquel Sánchez Jiménez, Spain’s Minister for Transport, Mobility and the Urban Agenda, in a press release. The European Parliament also approved the agreement at its July plenary session (see EUROPE 13220/5). The new rules will apply six months after the date of entry into force of the regulation.
