EU and Japan strengthen their cooperation in field of energy through specific dialogue on global LNG architecture

On Tuesday 18 July, at the 2023 Conference of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Producers and Consumers in Tokyo, the European Union and Japan established a dialogue on energy security with regard to the global LNG architecture. This decision follows the EU-Japan Summit held on 13 July in Brussels (see EUROPE 13222/10)

The dialogue is based on three pillars: global security of supply, market transparency and the reduction of methane emissions in the LNG supply chain.

As major LNG importers, the EU and Japan say they recognise the need to develop secure and transparent global LNG markets while taking climate concerns into account.

In terms of security of supply, the dialogue will facilitate collaboration on a global early warning system and the exchange of critical data between consuming and producing regions. The EU and Japan will also work together to reduce methane emissions in line with international commitments.
