29/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday, 28 June, the International Currency Association (ICA) welcomed the news that the European Commission had, that same day, adopted a proposal stipulating that the euro in its physical form has legal tender status (see EUROPE 13211/12). The proposal accompanied a proposal for a digital euro (see EUROPE 13211/12). ICA Chair Gianni Santoro notably expressed that the association, which brings together players from across the currency industry, is pleased that the European Commission has the ambition to ensure that euro banknotes and coins continue to be accepted by retailers. This point was the first of the recommendations that the ICA made in its White Paper on Cash Policy.
