29/06/23 (Agence Europe) – At a time when other pieces of legislation in the European ‘Green Deal’ are being challenged, the European Commission pointed out that the pioneering EU regulation aimed at curbing the EU’s contribution to global deforestation came into force on Thursday, 29 June. In accordance with reasonable due diligence throughout the supply chain, only products that companies can prove have not contributed to deforestation or forest degradation anywhere in the world after 31 December 2020 will be able to be placed on the European market or exported from the EU (see EUROPE 13183/17). The commodities concerned are soybeans, palm oil, livestock, timber, cocoa, coffee, and rubber as well as derived products. “The EU is taking its share of responsibility”, commented European Commissioner for the Environment Virginijus Sinkevičius.
