29/06/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 28 June, the EU Member States approved the mandate for negotiations on “digital trade principles” with Singapore and South Korea. The EU already has free trade agreements with these two countries, as well as specific digital agreements (see EUROPE 13113/6, 13072/9). This green light from the Council allows the Commission to start discussions with these two partners. The “digital trade principles” are intended to set out a series of principles to be respected in relation to digital issues such as data protection, barriers to data flows, and so on. However, they are not binding. (LM)
