17/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Wednesday 17 May that it had approved the addition of ‘Cedro di Santa Maria del Cedro’ from Italy to the EU register of protected designations of origin (PDOs). The PDO ‘Cedro di Santa Maria del Cedro’ designates the typical fruit of the citrus fruit known as citron, grown in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria. The colour, shape and consistency of the bark are unique and are closely linked both to the climatic factors typical of the Tyrrhenian coastal strip of the province of Cosenza and to the human factor. A typical technique in the production area of ‘Cedro di Santa Maria del Cedro’, which affects the final appearance of the product, is to make a lattice to protect it from the wind, cold and sunlight. This new name will be added to the list of 1,625 agricultural products that are already protected. (LC)
