China remains most worrying country on intellectual property rights according to European Commission report

On Wednesday 17 May, the European Commission published its report on the state of intellectual property rights (IPR) in third countries. It therefore identifies where the IPR enforcement situation is most worrying, and then focuses its efforts on these countries.

The report shows that China is the EU’s number one priority in this area. India and Turkey are then ranked as the second priority. Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and Thailand follow from that.

Trade in counterfeit goods is the biggest threat to intellectual property in the world. They therefore accounted for 5.8% of EU imports in 2019, according to data from the OECD and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).

In its report, the European Commission also identified challenges with regard to forced transfer of technology, low levels of business secrecy protection and delays in registering patents and trademarks.
