17/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – Several EU political and institutional figures put up multicoloured flags on their social networks or their facades on Wednesday 17 May to mark the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia. The European Commissioners for Transparency, Věra Jourová, and for Equality, Helena Dalli, have called for the fight against all forms of discrimination in order to achieve an “Union of Equality”. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed their support for the rights of LGBTQI+ people on Twitter. For his part, EU High Representative Josep Borrell deplored an “increase in anti-LGBTI rhetoric” both in Europe and around the world and called on the 67 states that continue to criminalise homosexuality “to immediately end this discriminatory practice”.
