EU Council appoints Luigi Di Maio as EU Special Representative

15/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 15 May, the EU Council appointed Luigi Di Maio as the European Union’s first Special Representative for the Gulf region, the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council announced (see EUROPE 13171/35). Luigi Di Maio, 36, is a former Italian foreign minister. The appointment is planned to start on 1 June 2023 for an initial period of 21 months. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the appointment of such an envoy on 18 November 2022 from Manama (see EUROPE 13066/31), saying there was a “historic opportunity” to build new ties between the two regions.
