15/05/2023 (Agence Europe) – Member States’ ambassadors to the European Union (Coreper) should be asked on Wednesday 17 May to confirm that the European elections will take place between Thursday 6 June and Sunday 9 June 2024. After discussions on alternative dates, the Member States did not reach a unanimous agreement to change the timetable enshrined in the EU Election Law. Due to a lack of political will in the EU Council, transnational lists led by a lead candidate (‘Spitzenkandidat’) who, if their electoral family wins and a stable majority in the European Parliament emerges from the ballot box, would be eligible to lead the European Commission, are not expected to emerge in spring 2024.
