15/05/23 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 15 May, the Council of the EU adopted a decision to sign an agreement with Montenegro on the operational activities of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), according to a statement. The agreement will allow for joint operations and the deployment of Frontex border management teams in Montenegro subject to the country’s agreement. According to Frontex’s new mandate, this applies to the whole territory and not only in the regions bordering the EU. The mandate also allows Frontex personnel to exercise executive powers, such as border controls and the registration of persons. The agreement will replace the current agreement between Montenegro and Frontex, which dates from 2020, the EU Council added. The agreement will be applied provisionally from 1 July 2023. The European Parliament will have to give its approval. (SP)
